Artificial Intelligence: Transforming the Government Mission

On October 14, 2020, the Homeland Security Dialogue Forum hosted its second annual Artificial Intelligence Symposium, Artificial Intelligence: Transforming the Government Mission. The symposium featured keynote remarks from Congressman Jim Banks on AI and the Future of Defense and Congresswoman Robin Kelly on the importance of AI in Government. High level panel discussions featuring David Aguilar, former Acting Commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection; Bob Costello, Executive Director Technology and Network Support; and Sunil Madhugiri, Acting CTO at US Customs and Border Protection; Mahtab Emdadi of Dell Technologies; Chery;l Ingstad, Director of Artificial Intelligence, Department of Energy; Dr. Jeff Allsott, IARPA, Office of the Director of National Intelligence; Major Nate Bastian, Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, DoD; Amanda Mercier, Lead Data Scientist, Azure Special Capabilities; and Gretchen Stewart, Intel’s Public Sector AI Specialist.
VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUM: Designing AI/ML to Support Government

On October 26, 2021 a series of panel discussions were held to explore AI/ML use cases within the Department of Homeland Security. Discussion included how AI/ML can increase supply chain security and resilience; countering adversarial AI; and AI/ML to create smart and resilient communities; among other areas. The videos below will present a range of leading technologists from DHS S&T, USCIS, CISA, and industry.
AI: Transforming the Government Mission

Building out artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities is a national security imperative. The rate of adoption of AI across the U.S. government is increasing and the vast amounts of data collected can deliver tremendous insights to enhance security, improve citizen services, and transform decision-making processes. The confluence of AI and edge computing will enable the federal government to take better advantage of cloud capabilities and achieve better mission outcomes. The U.S. cannot afford to fall behind in developing and adopting AI technology as U.S. adversaries are investing billions to stay
competitive in this area and are using AI to their advantage.
To examine these issues in detail, the Center for Public Policy Innovation (CPPI) and Homeland Security
Dialogue Forum (HSDF) convened a virtual symposium in October 2020—Artificial Intelligence:
Transforming the Government Mission. The following report includes major takeaways from a series of
keynotes and panel discussions with experts from across government and industry.
Securing the Complex Ecosystem of Hybrid Cloud

Hybrid cloud environments are more prevalent than ever across federal agencies.
It has become apparent that hybrid cloud delivers additional capability across the
enterprise to support a vast array of government missions—from enabling data
access in remote locations to layering on Artificial Intelligence applications. The
flip side to this enhanced capability are new attack vectors and vulnerabilities
that emerge as a result of hybrid architecture.
On September 25, 2019 the Center for Public Policy Innovation (CPPI) and Homeland Security Dialogue Forum (HSDF) convened a policy symposium to explore strategies for the development and deployment of AI. The wide-ranging discussion highlighted current use case scenarios, the importance of data to accelerate AI adoption, and the need for industry-government collaboration in the United States to stay ahead of adversaries in this area.
Securing the Complex Ecosystem of Hybrid Cloud Virtual Symposium

Hybrid cloud has become a critical fixture of IT architecture to enable federal agencies to meet their mission. While hybrid cloud delivers additional capability across the enterprise to support a vast array of government functions, there are remaining security concerns as users move between environments. The Center for Public Policy Innovation (CPPI) and Homeland Security Dialogue Forum (HSDF) hosted a virtual symposium on Securing the Complex Ecosystem of Hybrid Cloud to explore these areas in detail.
Keynotes from Rep. Gerry Connolly, Federal CISO Grant Schneider, and Air Force Chief Software Officer Nicolas Chaillan highlighted their priorities and experiences around accelerating hybrid cloud adoption and security. In addition, two panel discussions with government and industry experts also weighed-in.
It is more important than ever that the public and private sectors work together to advance IT modernization across the federal space. Please check out the event videos below to learn more about this important set of issues as hybrid cloud becomes even more prevalent.
Data is Fundamental to Artificial Intelligence in Government

The United States has arrived at a critical inflection point as artificial intelligence (AI) will vastly impact the daily lives of citizens and deliver unprecedented capabilities across the public and private sectors. Within the federal government, agencies are already adopting AI and devising strategies for how to effectively utilize this transformative technology? in particular, the use of AI has been most consequential in supporting the mission sets around homeland and national security.

Transforming the Homeland and National Security Missions Through Artificial Intelligence

We are at a critical inflection point in history. Artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging digital technologies have the potential to exponentially enhance human capabilities and the mission of government. The Department of Defense released their AI strategy in February of this year recognizing the importance of operationalizing this technology across the services, this includes standing-up the […]
Strengthening and Securing Federal Networks Through Modernization

On September 27, 2017, the Center for Public Policy Innovation and Homeland Security Dialogue Forum convened a panel discussion on Capitol Hill featuring experts from across the government and the private sector on the topic of modernizing IT across federal agencies. Moderated by Mr. Luke McCormack, former Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the discussion highlighted a number of areas including best practices for managing the IT modernization process, how modernization lends itself to improved cybersecurity posture, and opportunities to deliver increased capability to operators and improve the citizen experience. The panel included Ms. Margie Graves, Acting Federal Chief Information Officer at the Office of Management and Budget, Mr. Joseph Klimavicz, CIO at the Department of Justice; and Mr. Steve Harris, Senior Vice President at Dell EMC.
Congress Races to Embrace the Internet of Things

As industry charges ahead with the broad swath of technologies known as the Internet of Things (IoT), it appears that few industy players are paying attention to Congress and how public policy could impact big payoffs. The breakneck speed of IoT innovation is outpacing Congressional capacity to intake the breadth of change, let alone legislate […]
Public Trust is Crucial to Success of IoE
The Internet of Everything (IoE) represents a revolution in connectivity that will fuel unprecedented economic growth and brings with it the potential for enormous societal benefits. It is creating a “connectivity economy” that brings together people, networks, and devices to generate greater efficiencies, improved reliability, new capabilities, and richer experiences. The growth of IoE is […]
